Etruscan Revival 18 carat gold bulla pendant c.1860 inscribed ‘From V.R.’, the cypher of Queen Victoria, a Royal Gift.

The fine applied granules and rope twist of the gold work compliment the central deep red of the cabochon garnet.

The reverse is plainer with a glazed locket and Royal inscription beneath.

Condition immaculate but for one bruise to the gold on the reverse.

1.5 inches in length.

The Queen commissioned numerous gifts from Royal jewellers such as Collingwood, Garrard and Robert Phillips, presented to courtiers and favourites.

The Archeological Revival was made popular by Castellani in Rome and many British jewellers also produced pieces of masterful gold work with granulation, twisted filigree and designs inspired by antiquity.

Bullas were thought to have served as amulets or charms, often used to contain small objects for good luck or protection.
