Italian Grand Tour signed hardstone cameo portrait c.1810.
Still in its original leather travelling case and ormulu mount this agate portrait would have been carved by one of the eminent early c19th engravers working in Italy.I am unable to locate the exact artist but the piece is signed E.M.
The agate is mid brown with the relief a pale shade of taupe. The quality is comparable with the work of Saulini or Girometti.
There is extensive damage and subsequent restoration to the cameo which is now quite stable  but is not to be worn but rather a piece to have in a cabinet collection.
Cameo 4.5 by 3.5cms.
