Rare depiction of the iconic ‘Tyger’ mezzotint after James Northcote interpreted in bloodstone intaglio at the base of a 15ct gold Regency fob seal c.1810.
The gold work is deeply carved, with crisp detail, with a border of scrolls,flowers and acorns.
Height 1inch, bloodstone 3/4 by 1/2inch.
Never have I encountered this subject on a seal.
James Northcote (1746–1831), was admitted as a pupil into the studio and house of Sir Joshua Reynolds by the mid 1770s.He travelled to Italy but settled in London, where John Opie and Henry Fuseli were his rivals. He was elected associate of the Academy in 1786, and full academician in the following spring.
He is best remembered for his fine portraits and natural history paintings.
